Firegirl
Tony Abbott is an amazing author. In this book, a girl named Jessica Feeney moves into Tom's neighborhood and school. As said in the book:
'On the outside, it doesn't look like much happened. A burned girl (Jessica) was in my class for a while. Once I took her some homework. In class she said my name. Then she was gone.'
In some ways never imagined, though, Tom is changed in the inside. Stuff he used to do like playing with his friends Jeff and Rich don't seem to make sense anymore. To play and joke around while another person is somewhere fighting for her life and sitting alone every hour doesn't seem right. Firegirl is a powerful novel that shows how the smallest of gestures like bringing somebody (whom others don't like) their homework can have a great impact on someone.
When Tom and his class first meets Jessica, they are all disgusted. They are afraid of her and don't want anything to do with her. After a few days, Tom starts getting closer to her and at the end holds a tentative friendship with Jessica. As Tom starts going over to her house (first to drop off her homework but them slowly to see how she's doing), he learns more than he could every imagine about Jessica and her terrible accident. What has made Jessica this way and who is the mysterious girl in the picture? Will Jessica be okay? Read on as Tom slowly unravels the mysteries of Jessica's past and looks into her future.
***I give this book a 9 out of 10. Excellent novel study book!***
