Lia Kahn was one of those girls who had everything. She had a perfect boyfriend, she was rich, she was beautiful, and she was popular. Until the accident that took her old body and nearly took her life. Then she was downloaded into a human body's excuse of a robot, and her life changed drastically.
Skinned tells the story of a popular girl who had everything to a tale of the same girl who lost everything because of an accident, seeing that now she lost everything she stood for: her social life, her boyfriend, her friends, and her whole life. Even her sister turned on her, claiming she wasn't her sister and that her sister died. Harsh....
Skinned really puts into your mind what people think about you. The doctors tell Lia that the everyone will see that she's the same- that she thinks the same and that she's the same person underneath the skin. However, that's not the same case for Lia Kahn. How do you think your friends would act towards you if this happened to you? Surprised? Would they even be your friends now? Or would they shun you? Would they turn their backs on you? Tell you that you're not one of them? How would your family treat you? How would you feel about yourself? In this futuristic society, as an android with your mind, how would you feel about yourself? Good? Bad?Angry? Regretful? Skinned makes you ask yourself a lot of questions about yourself as well as about the people you hang around with.
Robin Wasserman was wrote this story very well- it's a really great book- the characters aren't Mary Sues, and they have flaws- they make mistakes, they have regrets and worries. These characteristics make them seem more real and life-like. However, it does have some dark thoughts and topics, therefore I do not recommend the book to children. It's a teen to young adult book.
***I give this book a 9.85 out of 10! ***
